CLAREMORE — Debra Wright remembers watching her kids’ classmates walk to class in shoes that barely beat scraps of fabric, coats barely better than t-shirts.
Her kids have long since grown — but apparently so has the problem, she says.
Wright began meeting with teachers of eight local schools this year to start a clothing donation drive for needy kids — the Our Kids Program, as she has come to call it. And the problem is worse than she thought.
“I have heard of one teacher who bought 17 pairs of shoes out of her own money for kids that had none or almost none,” she said. “The thought of these kids breaks my heart.”
Wright and her employers at Suburban Chevrolet in Claremore have started a donation drive at the dealership and are asking locals to donate nice pairs of shoes, coats, stocking caps and gloves.
Wright said she has met with faculty at Catoosa, Chelsea, Claremore, Foyil, Inola, Justus-Tiawah, Oologah and Sequoyah to collect lists of needs for students at each school — right down to shoe sizes, in some cases. Donations will go to students of those schools.
“I have heard of teachers buying coats and stocking caps for kids that are coming to school in temperatures below freezing with no coat,” she said. “As we are all aware, teachers’ pay is not that great. They need our help to help the kids.
“I know the people of Rogers County just have some of the biggest hearts around.”
Donors can call Wright at Suburban Chevrolet at (918) 343-3636 during business hours or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org to see what shoe and coat sizes are still needed. In the meantime, she has found a local sign company to donate fliers to give to businesses.
“I would like to be able to start giving the purchased items to the schools by around the first of August so that they can get them to the kids before school starts so they can start school with a brand new pair of shoes,” she said, although she added the program would likely run through the middle of August.
“Any and all donations will be appreciated and each donation will bring a smile to the face of a child in Rogers County.”
Oklahoma Motorsports Magazine's Feature Article on Keith Haney Racing Article by Brad Heath for Oklahoma Motorsports Magazine If I asked you to name a race team in Oklahoma that runs national events in the NHRA, runs a 6-second car and has a pit crew that features a former top fuel and funny car driver, you might say Mike Edwards. And with the exception of the crew chief you might be right. However, Keith Haney and the Keith Haney Racing Team burst on the scene a few years ago and have never looked back. A force in the Top Sportsman class they have made a name for themselves by being one of the top racing teams in the nation.
Keith Haney's racing career started out like most drag racers, just trying to get to the track on the weekends to bracket race. Hard work in his personal life has allowed Haney to grow his racing career from the modest bracket car to a million dollar operation, a sponsorship of the Top Sportsman class in the NHRA South Central Division and a sponsorship of Clay Millican's Parts Plus/Suburban Chevrolet Top Fuel Dragster.
After a couple of successful seasons, Haney is focused and determined to make 2011 his best yet. An aggressive racing schedule has the Keith Haney racing team traveling to Houston, Dallas, Sonoma CA, Las Vegas, Topeka KS, Belle Rose LA and of course Tulsa. "Everything is new this year. I mean everything with the car is an all new setup, but the crew is still the same," said Haney. And with drag racing legend John Collins twisting on the engine and giving Haney some pointers behind the wheel, this could very well turn into their best season on record.
With all the pieces in place the Keith Haney Racing Team is ready to debut the new car and hit the ground running. As the team grows and continues down the path of success, Haney said he felt they would consider doing more national events. "I do see us doing more national events. We're as big of a team as what you see on T.V. and we're local. We base our operation right here in Oklahoma and we support local racers by sponsoring the Suburban Chevrolet Bracket Series at Tulsa Raceway Park."
Considering where Keith Haney got his start and what he's done to get to this point in his career, this is truly a success story. But people close to Haney will tell you everyone on the team works tirelessly to maintain a level of professionalism that's obvious when you spend time around this team. As for the driver...Keith Haney...well you can bet he's probably up right now studying numbers from last weekend's race, cutting lights on the practice tree or trying to figure out new ways to promote Keith Haney Racing, Stroupe Race Cars and Suburban Chevrolet.

Staff Reports Claremore Progress
CLAREMORE — Rogers County United Way will kick off its annual fundraising effort a new way this year.
Campaign chair Ryan Neely and his committee are planning a family outdoor event Thursday, Sept. 16, from 7:30-9 p.m., at the NeMar Center parking lot.
Local band “The Vikings” will perform and there will be face painting, clowns, magicians and more. In addition to the carnival atmosphere and entertainment, RCUW agency directors will be on hand to distribute literature on the services they provide to area residents. They will also be giving testimonials throughout the evening.
Sponsors for the kick off include 1st Bank Oklahoma, Melton Sales, RCB Bank and Neely-Barstow.
This year’s goal of $475,000 has been given a jump start with its Trailblazers: Taylor, Burrage, Foster, Mallett, Downs & Ramsey Law Firm, Claremore Daily Progress, Suburban Chevrolet, 1st Bank Oklahoma, Summit Physical Therapy, and Grand Bank.
Several fundraising events already have been slated, including the Chocolate Affair on Oct. 7; Golf Tournament on Sept. 17; and the Holiday Boutique, Nov. 12-13.
RCUW benefits 27 agencies throughout the county that depend on funding received from the annual campaign.
“If it were not for the efforts of volunteers who work tirelessly on the campaign many of these agencies would not be available to our neighbors who need assistance,” said Donna Ross, executive director. “This year’s campaign theme says it best, ‘Live United — Need Never Sleeps.’”
